The spare wheel

Many motorists can not even remember that they ever checked the spare tyre. If the tyre is worn out and a situation comes when the tyre is needed it could cause further problems due to eg an expensive contact with the tow truck or another car service company.

TIP:
Check the air pressure in the spare wheel often, preferably while the air pressure of the tires are mounted on the car check.
Make sure you have the bolts that fit the rim of the spare tire.

Spare tires were in the past fitted in all cars. Nowadays, it is usually replaced by a smaller spare tyre to be with jack be in every car in the event of a puncture. Some automakers have a special spare tyre in some models to save space. These tyres are smaller than regular tyres and may not run on longer than the tyre specified distance.

Tyre Profile

Tyre profile is calculated as a percentage of tire width. One tires of size 205/60R15 tire has a width of 205mm and a profile of 60% of 205mm. Height profile is calculated by multiplying the tire’s width in profile as a percentage.

The age of the tyre

Expert recommends that summer tyres that are older than 6 years and winter tyres that are older than 4 years should be replaced since the tyre friction characteristics deteriorate through age and wear. A new tyre that hasn’t been used but been laying a couple of years inside, protected by wind and water, are in much better condition than a quite new tire that has been put into service.

In a survey conducted by the Road and Transport Research Institute (in Sweden) showed that snow tyres stored properly for three years was in the same condition as a new snow tyre of the same brand. Keep your tyres cool, dry and inside. Direct sunlight and too hot storage shortens the tyres age. Tyres (with rims) are stored standing, lying or hanging up in the rim.

Mark Webber signed for Red Bull 2011

Red Bull Racing announced on Monday that Mark Webber’s contract has been extended, meaning the Australian will continue to drive for the team next season. Webber, who leads the 2010 driver standings, has been with the Austrian-owned squad since 2007.

With Sebastian Vettel already contracted to Red Bull for next year, it means the team’s driver line-up will remain unchanged for the third season in a row.

“It was an easy decision to remain with Red Bull Racing,” said Webber, 33. “We began talking very early this year and were in a position to sign by the Barcelona Grand Prix. The decision to extend for a further year was a mutual one; it’s widely known that I’m not interested in hanging around in Formula One just for the sake of it and at this stage of my career, I’m happy to take one year at a time.
